No Exact Match Is Not a Dead End
When the hotel a visitor wanted is not there, what they need is a next step, not a blank page.
When a visitor searches a seller’s booking site and the catalogue truly has no match, results now carry a bilingual note, up to five alternatives at a similar price, and the contact channels the seller configured. Supplier errors never trigger this fallback, so “nothing found” and “search failed” always stay distinct.
A visitor searches a seller’s booking site for a hotel and gets nothing back. For the visitor, that page is often the end: close it and book elsewhere. The seller loses an enquiry that had already reached the door. An empty result is not wrong in itself. What is wrong is that it says nothing: is there truly no match, or did the search fail, and what can the visitor do next?
When the catalogue genuinely has no match, results now gain three things: a short note in Chinese and English; up to five alternative hotels at a similar price, ordered by name similarity, then lower price, then ID, so the same search always gives the same list; and the contact channels the seller set up for the store, such as WhatsApp or WeChat. With neither configured, no contact button appears, so visitors never meet a dead link.
Similar price follows a rule anyone can state: when the visitor gave a price range, alternatives come from that range widened by 25 per cent on each side. When they did not, the pool is every priceable hotel in the catalogue, with name similarity and price ordering keeping it relevant. A percentile-based band was rejected: it needs quotes aggregated by city and tier, while this path only has each hotel’s starting price, and it is not worth storing extra data for it.
The fallback appears only for a clean miss: an empty list, no supplier errors, and prices not missing across the board. When a supplier fails, the result is still marked failed or partial and is never dressed up as “no match, try these instead.” It applies only to static browsing and anonymous visitors on a seller’s booking site.
